What is hydro jetting?

Hydro jetting is a plumbing service offered by AtlasCare. It involved using a high-pressure stream of water to clean the inside surfaces of plumbing pipes. The strength of the water is what makes it so effective at eliminating blockages. Specifically, hydro jetting can help do away with scale, grease, and other debris that has accumulated in your home’s pipes. Please note that hydro jetting is different from rodding or snaking, in which a plumber uses a tool to create a hole in the blockage. With hydro jetting, pipes are thoroughly cleaned and the blockage is completely removed.

Is hydro jetting worth it?

Hydro jetting has tons of benefits. First and foremost, it is one of the most effective methods of getting rid of tough blockages in your piping system and drain lines. As mentioned above, the highly pressurized stream of water is so strong that it can clear everything from minor blockages to major obstructions. Some of the other benefits of hydro jetting are as follows:

  • Hydro jetting can remove grease from pipes
  • Hydro jetting can effectively remove tree roots and other debris, such as twigs, dirt, or leaves, from your piping system
  • Hydro jetting can remove tough clogs
  • Hydro jetting can eliminate scale buildup
  • Hydro jetting can eliminate blockages made up of soap, hair, food scraps, and more
  • Hydro jetting can increase the lifespan of your piping system
  • Hydro jetting can remove mineral deposits from forming in your pipes
  • Hydro jetting can remove blockages without affecting the quality or condition of your pipes

Therefore, if you suspect a blockage in your home’s piping system, contact AtlasCare today. We can send a fully licensed and certified plumber to your home to inspect your pipes and if they confirm a blockage, hydro jetting will almost certainly be worthwhile.

Does hydro jetting descale pipes?

Yes, hydro jetting is an effective method of descaling pipes. If your pipes have scale, your licensed AtlasCare plumber will do the following: They will start by clearing the clogged pipe using a highly pressurized jet of water. From there, they will attach a descaling nozzle to the hydro jet (the descaling nozzle has a chain attached to it, mimicking a chainsaw). When the hydro jet is turned on and the pressurized water starts to flow out of the descaling nozzle, the chain rotates, removing the rust and mineral buildup from the inside surface of the pipe. In essence, a hydro jet fitted with a descaling nozzle scrubs the pipe, removing scale, while simultaneously washing away the debris.

Beyond descaling pipes, there are several other issues that hydro jetting can solve. For example, hydro jetting can help restore water pressure after an obstruction has caused weak pressure, it can lower the risk of leaks or floods from blocked pipes, and it can reduce the risk of blockages forming in the future.

What are the telltale signs that your home could benefit from hydro jetting?

There are a few telltale signs indicating a blockage in your pipes. If you start to notice these, it’s important to call a licensed plumber, like those at AtlasCare, as soon as possible. A plumber can assess the issue and offer their professional opinion on whether your pipes could benefit from hydro jetting. Continue reading for a list of symptoms indicating clogged pipes.

  • Pipes that are draining slowly: If you’ve noticed the water in your sink has started draining slower and slower over the last while, there’s likely a blockage somewhere in your pipes.
  • Pipes that are making strange noises: If you’ve noticed loud or strange noises coming from your pipes, such as hissing, squeaking, gurgling, or ticking noises, it indicates the presence of air, which shouldn’t be there. The reality is that such noises could indicate a clogged or blocked pipe.
  • A foul odour coming from your bathroom or kitchen sink: A strong, pungent, or foul odour coming from your drains is generally not a good sign. While it could mean a number of things, one possibility is a blockage or clog.
  • An increase in your monthly utility bills: If your utility bills (especially your water bill) have risen without explanation, it could be a sign that there is a problem with your pipes. In such an instance, calling a plumber to perform an inspection is crucial.
  • Old pipes: If the piping system in your home is old, it’s possible that blockages are being caused by the deterioration of the pipes. Metal pipes have a lifespan of up to 80 years while brass or cast iron pipes have a lifespan of up to 100 years. But PVC pipes, which have become increasingly popular, may only last between 25 and 40 years. Try to identify the type of piping system you have and its age. If it’s nearing the end of its life, then the blockages could be caused by old age, in which case, hiring a plumber to inspect your system is the best course of action. They can let you know if a simple repair or service (such as hydro jetting) will do the trick or whether it’s worth replacing the entire system.

Is snaking or hydro jetting a better choice?

If you suspect a clog somewhere in your piping system and a certified plumber has confirmed the presence of the blockage, you might be wondering what the best course of action is. When it comes to eliminating tough clogs from pipes, there are generally two options: snaking or hydro jetting. To help you decide which one is right for you, we break down the key differences between the two below.

First, when deciding between snaking and hydro jetting, the age and health of your home’s pipes must be considered. Hydro jetting is generally more effective at clearing waste than draining, however, it might be too powerful for old or weak pipes. On the other hand, the effectiveness of a drain snake is dependent on the width of its tip. Drain snaking works by the tip meeting the main drain and flushing out any debris to the sewer pipe. But if the drain snake isn’t wide enough to fill the pipe, it likely won’t be able to remove all of the clog. Therefore, if you have newer pipes that can handle hydro jetting, it is likely the better technique.

The severity of the blockage must also be considered when choosing between hydro jetting and snaking. If the clog is minor, a plumber might be able to remove it using a traditional method like snaking. However, for moderate to major blockages, especially stubborn ones, snaking likely won’t do the trick. In this scenario, selecting the most powerful option (hydro jetting) will provide the best outcome.

A few situations in which hydro jetting is recommended over snaking include:

  • If there is a stubborn blockage in your home’s piping system
  • If you are experiencing recurring clogs
  • If you have identified multiple clogs
  • If you need to eliminate scale or buildup in your pipes that could affect the success of another plumbing job, like repairing a leak

Of course, if you still aren’t sure which method is better for your situation, contact AtlasCare today. One of our fully licensed and certified plumbers will be pleased to explain both options to you and offer their professional opinion on which will be most effective under the circumstances.

Our FAQS

Providing You With Answers & Solutions
  • How Often Should I Flush My Water Heater?

Regularly flushing your water heater is important to protect the longevity and efficiency of your system. As a general rule of thumb, we recommend flushing out your water heater at least once a year to avoid mineral and sediment buildup and extend the lifespan of your unit. However, more frequent flushing may be necessary depending on your local water supply. If you live in an area with hard water or a high mineral concentration, it’s best to flush out your water heater at least twice a year to prevent damage and mineral buildup.

  • What Size Water Heater Do I Need?

Choosing the correct water heater size for your residential space will depend on a variety of factors, including:

    • Household/family size
    • The type and quantity of fixtures
    • Your property’s unique specifications
    • Frequency of hot water consumption
    • Your local climate and groundwater temperatures
    • The flow velocity of sinks, washers, washing machines, and bathtubs

It’s important to reach out to a certified professional to make sure your new water heater is appropriately sized and capable of supporting hot water usage in your household. At AtlasCare, our experts can thoroughly inspect your property and recommend cost-effective solutions for water heater installation or replacement!

  • How Long Do Water Heaters Last in Oakville?

The lifespan of your water heater depends on certain factors, including the system type, the water quality in your area, usage frequency, and maintenance history. On average, tank water heaters last around 8-12 years. While investing in regular maintenance can help extend the lifespan of your tank water heater, such as draining the tank to remove sediment, these systems won’t last as long as tankless models.

Tankless water heaters can last 15-20 years or more, making them a popular choice for homeowners to enjoy long-term savings. Regular descaling and professional maintenance is key to extend the lifespan of your tankless water heater and keep it operating efficiently, especially in areas with hard water.

If your water heater is approaching the end of its lifespan, investing in a suitable replacement is essential to avoid unexpected breakdowns and costly damage. With nearly a century of experience serving Oakville homeowners, you can count on AtlasCare to recommend suitable replacement options and provide top-quality installation tailored to your needs!
